A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to the Walt Disney Company’s EMEA Head office in Hammersmith to watch a special screening of Newsies the Broadway Musical.
Of course I accepted and booked the day off straight away to make sure I could go!
I had heard of Newsies before, but hadn’t seen it (our screening was the first time it had been seen in the UK) or heard the soundtrack and I didn’t even know what it was about, so I was super excited to be invited to the screening.
Newsies is based on the true story of the newsboys’ strike of 1899, when Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst increased the price per paper for the “Newsies” to buy. The newspaper publishers didn’t buy back any unsold newspapers, so the Newsies couldn’t afford to buy more papers than they could sell and certainly couldn’t afford the rise in prices – so they went on strike.
Disney’s private screening cinema
The musical was adapted from the 1992 film starring Christian Bale, which was a flop and didn’t do so well at the cinema. However, once the film was released on DVD, it built up a cult following and people were begging Disney to bring it to the big stage – so they trialled it in a couple of small theaters. When that was a much bigger success than they were anticipating, they trialled it on Broadway for 3 months… which turned into a two year run and an extremely successful US tour. Newsies was a hit!
I’m really not surprised it turned into a hit, the show was amazing – I left the cinema feeling really inspired and motivated, I felt like I wanted to go protest something, haha! It was really heartwarming, you found yourself really rooting for the characters and I ended up so emotionally involved in the story. Other people in the cinema even ended up crying!
Jeremy Jordan (who you may have seen in the current TV series, Supergirl) stars as the main character Jack Kelly, the leader of the Newsies who has the idea for the strike. He is absolutely wonderful and very dreamy if you’re looking for some eye candy to watch haha! The cast in general are amazing – my favourite Newsie is Race played by Ben Cook. I can’t explain why I love him so much, I just do. I think it’s the cockiness about him and his voice was super cute. I’d be his pal!
I loved this Walt Disney bust!
If you are a musical fan, you will 100% love this show. I’ve been obsessed with the soundtrack since I watched it, I’ve been playing it so much that I now know a lot of the words to the songs – no shame. Alan Menken wrote the music (he is one of the masterminds behind the soundtracks of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tangled, The Little Mermaid and more, so you know the soundtrack is going to be good!)
My favourite songs are “Seize the Day”, “I Never Planned on Someone Like You” and “Once and For All”. Oh and “Carrying the Banner”. I will stop now but I probably could list them all! If you’re not sure about seeing this film – listen to a couple of those songs I’ve just listed and if that doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will! (It’s on Spotify right now, just sayin’)
The choreography is incredible and apparently there are 31 backflips in the entire show! I’m so jealous that I can’t dance – I’d love to be part of musicals like this one. It was also super interesting to watch a filmed version of a show, because you didn’t miss anything, the camera made sure you saw all of the action. I would have loved to have seen it on stage though!
I’ve never had a cup of coffee in a cinema before, more places should offer that! Also, how adorable is this mug?
So enough of my gushing over the film right? You want to know how you can see it too! This film is out in UK cinemas for ONE DAY ONLY, on Sunday 19th February 2017. To buy tickets, you can visit the Newsies the Musical website and find your nearest cinema showing it. I am 100% going again and dragging Dan along with me, I know he will love it too. And let’s all beg Disney to let us have it on DVD too! 😉
All in all, I would definitely encourage anyone to go see this film. If you liked musicals like the Lion King or Wicked or any of the current hit shows, you will love this show. Let me know if you’re going to see it in the comments!
